The Brescia Export consortium is now a key player in the world of Italian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), with 140 members generating total turnover of € 1,400,000,000, 49% of which is from exports (compared to the average figure of 24% for companies in the Lombardy Region). It has a workforce of 4,800 employees.
It was founded in 1982 to support SMEs in expanding their businesses onto foreign markets by supplying expertise and logistic-organisational backing and reducing the cost of starting up new markets..
The consortium thus sets out to overcome the problem faced by the majority of firms which, although they represent the peak of excellence in Italian manufacturing, do not have the knowledge and experience required to deal with international markets and their often complex peculiarities.
Finding Business-to-Business customers and suitable importers/distributors, opening sales offices or taking part in trade fairs abroad are expensive, delicate, complex matters often beyond the capabilities of the individual SME, which does not have the necessary financial resources and specific skill sets. In such cases, the consortium is able to allocate funds and specialised human resources to organise and coordinate operations, reducing the financial impact and increasing the chances of success.
To guarantee better contacts with local players, Brescia Export has organisations in the USA (New York and Reno), Russia (St Petersburg and Novosibirsk), China (Hong Kong and Shanghai), Croatia (Zagreb and Dubrovnik), Serbia (Belgrade) and Turkey (Istanbul) able to represent its members.
Creating value for its member firms and assisting them in their growth also means organising training and skill upgrading courses on export-related matters and selecting suitable service companies, banks and external consultants, with which special terms are negotiated for the consortium's members using the bargaining power generated by combined demand.
